Twisting poses and preparatory practice towards Padmasana with Lara Speroni

We are happy that Lara Speroni is coming again this summer to Pula to share her knowledge with us over the weekend of 29.06-01.07.2018.

We will be learning twisting poses that can be done standing, sitting or when upside-down. Apart from having many health benefits like relieving back pain, cleansing and detoxifying the body, stimulating digestion and circulation, and toning of the abdominal muscles, twists help us to stay in the present moment and they are extremely balancing. They are definitely the precursors to a successful meditation practice, using Prashant’s Iyengar words: “The twisting of the body, untwists the mind”.

We will be also practicing poses that help towards achieving Padmasana or Lotus Pose.

BKS Iyengar explains that Padmasana is the best pose to sit for the practice of Pranayama and meditation. We are all familiar with images of Rishis and Munis seated in meditation, in Padmasana, with the spine held straight and firm. It is the only pose where the entire spine can be truly erect and the brain alert and active. It is the pose for spiritual and meditative practices. Given Padmasana’s very special position it is only natural that people want to be able to practice it. Some of us find it very easy to sit in Padmansa, but many struggle with it. Either way much more attention has to be paid to this pose than just focussing on attaining the flexibility to perform it.

The lotus flower is one of the most ancient and deepest symbols of our planet and it can represent long life, health, honour, and good luck. The lotus flower grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty. At night the flower closes and sinks underwater, at dawn it rises and opens again. This pattern of growth signifies the progress of the soul from the primeval mud of materialism, through the waters of experience, and into the bright sunshine of enlightenment. Untouched by the impurity, the lotus symbolizes the purity of heart and mind.

We will have time to pay detailed attention to this yogic Padmasana wherein one aims ultimately to stay in comfort and undistracted for long periods of time.
